LITTLE KNOWN GULLAH RENAISSANCE FACT
Each of our custom patterns are inspired by Historically Black beaches, people, and or events! For example, The Atlantic Beach Collection is inspired by "The Black Pearl" known as Atlantic Beach.
Atlantic Beach is a stretch of beach that sits between Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach. It was once known as South Carolina's ONLY black-friendly beach. Atlantic Beach was founded in 1930 by a small group of black business people and professionals and became known as "The Black Pearl".
In the 40s and 50s, Atlantic Beach became a popular tourist attraction for blacks from across the United States looking for a safe and beautiful place to vacation. Popular black musicians who were booked along the Grand Strand and played for white audiences weren't allowed to stay in white hotels; Atlantic Beach became a popular safe-haven
Count Basie, Ray Charles, Billie Holiday, James Brown, The Drifters, Martha and the Vandellas, The Tams, Bo Diddley and Otis Reading all left their imprints in the sands of Atlantic Beach.
